Release: 2003-07

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK:

From the day it was released in 2000, Keeping a Nature Journal has struck a profound chord among professional, casual, and occasional naturalists of all ages. In response to this groundswell of enthusiasm, we have revised KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL, updated the interior design, and created a new cover. Undoubtedly the most exciting new element in this second edition is a portfolio of 32 illustrated pages from Clare Walker Leslie's most recent journals, reproduced in full color. What makes KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL so popular? It is inspiring and easy to use. Clare and co-author Charles Chuck E. Roth offer simple techniques to give first-time journal-keepers the confidence to go outside, observe the natural world, and sketch and write about what they see. At the same time, they motivate long-time journal-keepers to hone their powers of observation as they immerse themselves in the mysteries of the natural world. Clare and Chuck stress that the journal is a personal record of daily experience and the world around us. Nature's beauty can be observed everywhere, whether in the city, suburbs, or country.

Author: Tim Pond
Pages: 192
ISBN: 9781781265123

Editor: Search Press Limited

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK:

Artist Tim Pond's lively and engaging book fuses science with art, providing the reader with the skills, techniques and knowledge they need to create sketches of animals filled with life and movement. There are some very good books written on life drawing, yet when it comes to drawing wildlife, illustrators and artists often revert to working solely from photographs, which can leave the artwork looking lifeless and flat. In this inspirational book, artist Tim Pond shows you how to observe and draw animals in zoos, farms, wildlife parks and aquariums, teaching you some fascinating facts about the animals along the way and ultimately bringing you closer to nature. One of the challenges with sketching wildlife is that animals are constantly moving. However by having some basic understanding of the biology of an animal, such as knowing that a duck has a cheek or that a cheetah can't retract its claws, can influence how you might sketch them, and results in a lively drawing that captures the form, movement and ultimately the spirit of the animal in question. Combining scientific knowledge with expert practical guidance is key to creating successful drawings of animals, and Tim's ability to convey this in a way that is both accessible and engaging makes this a unique and inspiring guide suitable for artists of all levels. Tim's book takes you on a journey of discovery that will enable you to develop the skills, techniques and knowledge you need to sketch a broad range of wildlife, encompassing mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and insects. It includes quick, gestural sketches as well as linear and tonal studies, in a variety of media - pencil, pen and ink, and watercolour. There are numerous studies comprising how to represent the different patterns of animals' coats, how to capture the plumage of an exotic bird in watercolour, and how to sketch a hippo's hooves, as well as guidance on tools, materials and basic techniques. The result is a treasure chest of fascinating facts, studies, sketches and annotated drawings that will not fail to ignite your enthusiasm for drawing animals from life.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK:

Over 35,000 copies sold! As a naturalist managing the field studies program at the California Academy of Sciences, John Muir Laws noticed that novice birders often distinguish birds by color and size rather than species. This inspired him to create Sierra Birds: A Hiker's Guide, a unique book that assumes no prior birding knowledge on the part of the reader. Color-coded keys eliminate the time-consuming frustration of thumbing randomly through a guide, and a cross-index is also included for more advanced birders. All this in a format that is simply organized, lightweight, and small enough to tuck inside a pocket. A first-rate naturalist, Laws is also an accomplished artist. His illustrations are lively, colorful, and accurate, and drawn to represent species in the manner in which one generally sees them in the field.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK:

A Kid's Nature Journal! The pages of this perfect bound (think coloring book) journal are printed on a very nice 55 lb paper, but markers and paint WILL bleed through. Good old pencils and color pencils are going to work beautifully for your child's nature journal entries. This simple and easy to use kids nature journal was designed with children ages 6-12 in mind (but of course can be used by any age!). My own kids (so I would assume a few others) were always somewhat overwhelmed by the big open space of a completely blank page when they first began their adventures in nature study. So I teamed up with my 9 year old daughter, and we came up with a non-intimidating journal that was fun and easy for her to just take out and use any time, with little help from me. It is really a nature workbook of sorts, and has been designed to encourage frequency of use, and therefore develop the lifelong habit of nature observation. This 8"x10" nature journal has 102 pages total with 45 (front and back) pages for recording important information on the wide ruled lines (such as the date, location, lunar phase etc.) and sketches. The following pages have been included in the front of this nature journal: * A place to record the owner's name. * A list of nature observation tips. * A few handy supplies. * How to use this journal. * Phases of the moon. * A few animal tracks. * Plants to avoid. Again, the pages are printed on 55 lb paper and markers and paint will bleed through. Pencils and color pencils are what will work best for journal entries.
